How to Access Your Intuition

What is Intuition

It is the inner knowing and often unexplainable. Sometimes, intuition is described as that gut feeling. It’s a feeling of knowing what you need and what is best for you.

How to Connect to Your Intuition

Create Space

If you are always busy, you won’t be able to hear it. Create space in your day and during your week to slow down, disconnect from social media, and allow your intuition to talk to you.

You can create space by

- Checking in with yourself throughout the day

- Taking care of yourself

- Regulating your emotions

Understanding Yourself

Who are you? What do you like? Spend time getting familiar with who you are. What are your likes, and what are your values? It becomes easier to tune in and listen to your intuition when you know who you are and what is true to you.

Check in with yourself throughout the day. Do I actually like this or is this something that I’ve learned to like because others around me do?

Journaling can be another great way to connect to your self. Check out this journal with prompt ideas.

Setting Boundaries

Sometimes getting feedback from others can be helpful when deciding but sometimes this can also overshadow your intuition. When other's opinions are louder than your intuition this is a great time to set boundaries.

People are going to have their thoughts and opinions but that doesn’t always mean they need to weigh in. Say you are deciding about a new job or looking at a new apartment. Friends can help you look at the pros/cons but at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with the choice.

The more you understand yourself the easier it will get to make decisions with your intuition

Recognize What Your Intuition Feels Like

It can be easy to mistake intuition for something else such as anxiety, fear, or others’ opinions. Reflect on a recent time when you felt your intuition. That’s ok if you can’t remember one. When you do notice yourself connecting to your intuition make note of it so you can recognize it again.

What to Look for

Checking in with your body can be a great way to notice your intuition because we often notice physical responses first. Scan your body and pay attention to what you notice.

What emotions do you notice that may arise when you are connecting to your intuition? Perhaps you feel calm or maybe you feel nervous because your intuition is telling you that you are not safe, or this isn’t right.

Getting clear on how connecting to your intuition feels will help and it will come with practice.
